Wave effects on the hydroelastic response of a surface-piercing hydrofoil. Part 1. Fully wetted and ventilated flows

This work describes the effects of waves on hydroelastic response a hydrofoil in fully wetted and ventilated flows. In absence vaporous cavitation (described Part 2 this paper series), shallow long-period non-breaking delayed ventilation inception because velocity fluctuations prevent formation stably separated region flow at foil's leading edge. Aerated von Kármán vortex shedding occurred from blunt trailing edge, producing vortex-induced vibration near-constant Strouhal number. Regular led to near sinusoidal oscillations load deformations wave encounter frequency, while mean dynamic other frequency peaks corresponding hydrodynamic structural modes remained mostly unaffected. Significant amplification was observed submerged aspect ratio for cases with low angles attack coalescence between second third modes; high attack, amplitude flow-induced vibrations reduced energy diverted away frequencies nearby frequency. both calm water conditions, transition resulted sudden significant reduction coefficients, as well foil deflections.
